SAN LEANDRO -- A registered sex offender was back behind bars on Tuesday after police say he followed a 15-year-old jogger to her home Sunday evening.
The girl told police that about 5:15 p.m. she was running through her neighborhood when she saw a suspicious man walking behind her. The suspect -- later identified as Alton Lamont Watson, 50, of San Leandro -- followed the girl home and stopped in front of her house, police said.
The girl immediately told her family what happened and they went outside and confronted the suspect, said Lt. Randy Brandt. The man, he said, had no logical explanation for being in the area and left. The girl's family then dialed 911 and police responded to her home.
The girl gave a description of the suspect to officers and they located him on Estudillo Avenue near Grand Avenue, a couple of blocks away from the family's home.
The girl then identified Watson as the suspect who followed her home, Brandt said.
A records check showed Watson is a registered sex offender on parole for committing a sexual assault. He was arrested on suspicion of annoying and molesting a child and for violating his parole.
"Her actions may have prevented her from getting assaulted," Brandt said.
As of Tuesday morning he was being held at the Santa Rita Jail without bail, jail records show.
