OAKLAND -- In an attack that has similarities to another incident last November, police are seeking a man who sexually molested a 9-year-old girl in front of her East Oakland home Monday evening.

The girl's family was able to scare the man away before he could carry her off, possibly to a nearby vehicle, police said.

The man is similar in appearance to one of two suspects who tried to abduct a 14-year-old in another part of East Oakland Nov. 5.

In Monday's incident, the girl was playing alone about 6:20 p.m. in front of her house in the 1200 block of 94th Avenue.

A man she did not know came up to her, wrapped both of his arms around her, picked her up and began to molest her, police said. As the man tried to carry her away, the girl's screams attracted the attention of relatives and neighbors. As they began coming toward the man, he put the girl down and fled.

A witness saw him get into a vehicle down the street and take off.

The suspect is described as Latino, mid- to late 20s, about 5 feet 8 and 170 pounds with a light complexion, ears "that stick out," short black hair spiked in front and long in the back, a mustache and goatee, police said. He wore a gray shirt with long black sleeves and a black stripe on the chest and blue jeans.

The car he was driving was described as a 1990s silver Honda Civic two-door.

Investigators released video surveillance of the suspect Tuesday afternoon.

In the Nov. 5 incident, two men tried to kidnap a 14-year-old girl about 4:30 p.m. as she walked in the 1400 block of 103rd Avenue.

The girl was approached from behind by a man who grabbed her and tried to pull her into a red Dodge Ram truck parked nearby driven by another man. The girl was able to escape and run home before she was forced into the truck. Neither suspect was ever arrested and the girl said she did not know them.

The man waiting in the truck is similar in appearance to the man in Monday's attack. He was described then as white or possibly Latino, mid- to late 20s, tall, about 140 to 150 pounds with a goatee and short brown spiked hair. The man who grabbed the girl had the same general characteristics but had blonde shoulder length hair and was clean shaven.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the man's arrest in Monday's incident and up to $2,500 in the Nov. 5 incident. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3641 or a tip line at 510-637-0298.
