An Alameda County Sheriff's deputy was dragged by a vehicle and shot and a suspect critically wounded in Oakland on Saturday night, investigators said.

The deputy received a minor foot injury and is in stable condition, while the driver of the vehicle was critically injured and taken to Highland Hospital, Alameda County sheriff's officials said. How the driver was hurt is unknown at this time, but multiple shots were fired at 33rd Avenue and San Leandro Street, near the Fruitvale BART station. Police closed nearby streets off to traffic as they investigated.

Investigators said the deputy was in the process of a traffic stop and arresting the driver and the one passenger for possession of drugs, when the car sped off, dragging the officer. At some point the officer and possibly someone else fired their weapons, officials said.

At least four bullet casings were marked at the scene.
