FREMONT -- Once upon a time in the late 1960s, when the Rat Pack still ruled Las Vegas, Richard King had the chance to meet the desert city's greatest ambassador, Mr. Frank Sinatra.
King -- a Fremont attorney and vocalist who frequently performed in casino lounges back then -- listened as Ol' Blue Eyes offered singing advice, saying that it's less about hitting the right notes and more about the audience "getting the honesty" of the performer's interpretation of the lyrics.
"All you have to do is tell the story," Sinatra said.
King aims once again to follow that advice and summon much of Sin City's entertainment magic on April 20, when the Fremont Symphony Orchestra has scheduled a gala fundraiser.
The event's theme is "Viva Las Vegas!" Given King's history of performing in the fabled gambling Mecca, as well as his longtime support of the orchestra, he was an obvious choice to be the event's featured performer.
King, an orchestra board member and former Fremont Planning Commissioner, will be accompanied on piano by board President Steve Pietkiewicz.
"We are excited to be hosting this amazing event," said Lee Foster, the orchestra's executive director. "It is an evening not to be missed, as we celebrate the revitalization of this beloved symphony."
The festivities are scheduled to begin with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by a live and silent auction, and a buffet dinner. The fundraiser will be held at Central Chevrolet, at 4949 Thornton Ave.
All proceeds will benefit the orchestra. The event is the last of several fundraisers held in the past six months, which so far have raised about $75,000, Foster said. That is three-fourths of what is needed to fund the orchestra's 50th anniversary season, scheduled to begin in the fall, she said.
Tickets are $100 per person. To purchase tickets or for details, call 510-371-4860 or visit www.fremont symphony.org.
