Hornets win Stargell opener in seventh The Alameda High baseball team received a game-winning RBI single by Jesse Lewis in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Heritage 4-3 in the first round of the Willie Stargell Memorial Easter Classic on March 30. Erik VanWinkle and Sean Cunningham both had two hits for the Hornets, who advanced to a semifinal game on April 2 against Acalanes. Results of the game were unavailable at press time.
Hamilton III, Traylor win at Stanford Bishop O'Dowd High's Eugene Hamilton III and Berkeley's James Traylor both were victorious in high school boys events at the Stanford Invitational on March 30. Hamilton III had the fastest time in the mile by more than 31/2 seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 12.74 seconds. Converted to 1,600 meters, the time is 4:11.27, faster than any high school boy in the state has run this season according to prepcaltrack.com. Traylor won the 110 high hurdles in a wind-legal 14.21 seconds, a full .10 ahead of second-place Marquis Morris of De La Salle. Traylor's time also leads the state according to prepcaltrack.com.
O'Neal leads El Cerrito team The El Cerrito High School Mountain Bike Racing team was paced by a win from Tyler O'Neal at a race in Granite Bay on March 24. O'Neal won the sophomore boys race for El Cerrito's best finish in a race at the competition

Encinal at Berkeley, baseball, April 10, San Pablo Park, 3:45 p.m. -- The Yellowjackets and the Jets are both in the thick of the West Alameda County Conference title race.
Stars of the week Kaleo Johnson, Encinal baseball -- Johnson was 2 for 3 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBI in an 11-1 win over Skyline on March 30. He also was 3 for 4 with five runs scored and six RBI in a 23-2 five-inning victory over Hayward on March 27. He also had a double and a triple in that game. David Na, Alameda boys golf -- Na won the San Leandro Tournament individual title with a score of two-over 73 at Monarch Bay Golf Course on March 25. He won medalist honors in a playoff with teammate Danny Ro, who also shot 73. Alameda also won the team title. Eugene Hamilton III, Bishop O'Dowd boys track and field -- Hamilton III, an Arizona signee, produced the fastest time in the mile at the Stanford Invitational on March 30: 4:12.74, more than 31/2 seconds faster than the No. 2 time in the event. Georgia Hill, Piedmont softball -- Hill pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 10-0, five-inning win over Tennyson on March 28. On March 26, she also threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and also went 3 for 3 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored and seven RBI in a 17-1 nonleague win over University. Devin Mahoney, St. Mary's baseball -- Mahoney went 4 for 4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and two RBI in a 7-4 nonleague loss to Serra-San Mateo on March 28. Michael Rabin, Albany baseball -- Rabin went 3 for 4 at the plate, including a double, scored two run sand drove in one in a 9-8 nonleague victory over College Prep on March 26.
