HAYWARD -- A hike to the site of the farm and burial place of Ukrainian patriot Agapius Honcharenko is planned for April 6.
Honcharenko, an exiled Greek Orthodox priest, came to Hayward in 1873 with his wife, Albina Citti Honcharenko. They founded Ukraina Ranch in the hills, and he continued to publish political literature that was smuggled into Czarist Russia.
The farm, where the Honcharenko are buried, is a state historical landmark.
The two-hour hike begins at 9 a.m. at the trail access on Carden Lane by Stonebrae Elementary School, near the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Hayward Boulevard. The three-mile walk is hosted by the Hayward Area Historical Society.
