OAKLAND - A man fatally shot Tuesday evening outside an East Oakland house where marijuana was being grown was identified by authorities Wednesday as Keith Harding, 29.

Police said Harding had a connection to the marijuana grow but they are still trying to establish exactly what it was.

Police said Harding had been living at the house in the 1600 block of 85th Avenue for two weeks but that the marijuana growing operation had been going on there much longer.

A total of 142 marijuana plants in different stages of growth were found inside the house, as well as equipment used for indoor grows, police said.

The marijuana was worth tens of thousands of dollars, authorities said.

Harding was shot about 5:53 p.m. outside the house. It is believed he was confronted by two men who fled after one of them shot him. He died later at a hospital.

Police have not ruled out robbery as a motive.

Police found expired permits for marijuana growing inside the house but said Harding's name was not on them and that the amount of plants seized was larger than authorized under city ordinances. Authorities have not said whose names are on the permits.

The killing was Oakland's 26th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 35 homicides in Oakland.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or a tip line at 510-773-2805.
