Prayer for Boston and the country
I, along with other Muslims in America, condemn the recent bomb attacks in Boston and pray that the victims may recover speedily.
As a Muslim, I uphold the sanctity of life as the Holy Quran mentions that killing one man is like killing the whole of mankind (5:33). I give my fullest support to President Barack Obama and other authorities to resolve this matter in the most judicious manner so that we can live in a peaceful country.
Don't let another attack take the innocent life of an 8-year-old. My prayer is with the people of Boston.
Good reporting on the hospital probe
I commend the Bay Area News Group and Ashly McGlone for fine reporting on Washington Hospital.
Given that this is a public hospital, paid for by the citizens of the Tri-Cities, it is important that we be informed of a federal probe.
I certainly don't see the administration giving us this information. Hospital officials continually refuse to open their books on this center's costs and revenue.
And they simply do this under the guise of giving information to their competitors. Who are their competitors? It is my understanding that Medicare costs for services are public knowledge.
I am hoping that with this federal probe, the citizens of this area will have a better understanding of how this hospital district misuses our health care and tax dollars.
Pension reform efforts just a ploy
This is regarding the April 12 editorial on state pension reform.
Whenever these anti-pension folks start feeding you numbers, remember this: The real forces behind pension reform are not working for fiscal responsibility.
They want every retirement dollar out there in a 401(k) or other such vehicle. That way, the people who sent them can play with the money while you are at work.
Traditional pensions drive them nuts only because they can't get their hands on that money.
Personal security our responsibility
The Boston Marathon bombing proves the Second Amendment is necessary for our country's security.
Framers of the Constitution knew the importance of our personal security: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
We are the government of the people. Each American is a member of our "well regulated militia." It's the responsibility of every willing American to train and be proficient with arms and be regulated to protect ourselves, our family, our community and our country.
The Department of Homeland Security is worthless and must be eliminated. It has ordered 1.6 billion bullets; enough to fire five bullets into every person in America. It ordered 2,700 rubber-tired armored tanks to patrol our cities. Why?
Homeland Security searches old ladies and babies. Airports and federal, state and county buildings require searches. Why is that agency so privileged? Stop it!
Terrorists can bomb us while we're in lines at airports, sporting events, at Walmart, or church, or BART -- everywhere.
Entire community must fight bullying
This is regarding the sexual assault/suicide case of Audrie Pott in Saratoga.
As a mother of a young daughter, I am haunted by the stream of similar cases that continue to emerge here in the Bay Area and across the country.
What are we, as parents, doing to make sure that we raise our children to be respectful and empathetic to each other? How are we teaching them to watch out for each other and step forward when they see humiliating or demeaning photos on social media sites?
I am wary of the road my daughter will travel to reach adulthood. I can help guide her to become a conscientious and respectful person, but I must also rely upon members of my community to do the same with their children.
We need to stop this bullying and help our young people grow up in a safe environment.
