OAKLAND -- A woman was shot and killed Wednesday night, and her young child was present when police arrived, officials said.
Police responded to 54th Street just west of Shattuck Avenue at 8:43 p.m., said Lt. Robert Chan of the Oakland Police Department. The shooting was just blocks away from Children's Hospital & Research Center.
The woman, in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear what her toddler-aged child may or may not have seen, Chan said.
The woman has not yet been identified and though police do have information regarding a suspect, none could be released late Wednesday.
This is the city's 31st homicide of 2013.
