ALAMEDA -- The City Council is soliciting applications from residents who would like to serve on a city board or commission.
Applications are available from the City Clerk in Room 380 at City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Ave., or by calling 510-747-4800, or through the city's website. Deadline to apply is May 16.
The Civil Service Board, which has one vacancy, meets quarterly on the first Wednesday of the month, at 5 p.m. in City Hall. The board ensures competent and efficient personnel practices, impartial and competitive examinations, fitness- and merit-based appointments, and fair discipline.
The Commission on Disability Issues, which has three vacancies, meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Monday of each month in City Hall. The commission provides information and make recommendations on disability issues to the City Council and to receive information regarding the disabled from the public. The Economic Development Commission, which has five vacancies, provides advice on the implementation of economic development goals identified in the city's Strategic Plan and General Plan. It meets the third Thursday of every other month at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The Golf Commission, which has two vacancies, advises the City Council on the operation of the Chuck Corica Golf Complex. It meets the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the complex, 1 Clubhouse Memorial Road.
The Historical Advisory Board, which has two vacancies, meets the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at City Hall. It advises the council on historical issues in connection to the city. The Library Board, which has two vacancies, meets the second Wednesday of odd months, at 6 p.m.at the main branch of the Alameda Free Library. The Planning Board, which has two vacancies, meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month, at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The board advises the council on the location, design and modification of physical development in the city. The Public Art Commission, which has once vacancy, works to incorporate public art and cultural programs into private and public projects and promote the public's enjoyment of the art. The commission meets as needed. The vacancy is for a partial term that will expire on June 30, 2014.
The Public Utilities Board, which has one vacancy, meets the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The board manages Alameda Power and Telecom.
The Social Service Human Relations Board, which has one vacancy, meets the fourth Thursday of each month, except for a combined November/December meeting on a different day due to holidays, at 7 p.m. in City Hall. The Transportation Commission, which has one vacancy meets the fourth Wednesday of odd months at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The opening is for a partial term that will expire June 30, 2015.
The Youth Advisory Commission, which has three vacancies, meets the second Tuesday of every month, except June through August, at 5 p.m. at City Hall. It advises city policy makers about issues that are of concern to young people.
