HAYWARD -- One person was shot Monday evening in an altercation near the intersection of Interstates 880 and 238, an Alameda County Sheriff's spokesman said.

Alameda County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said that deputies were summoned just after 5 p.m. for a report of a person shot on Usher Street near Lewelling Boulevard. When deputies arrived they found a male suffering from a minor gunshot wound to the shoulder, Nelson said.

The wounded subject said he was driving with his cousin northbound on I-880 near A Street, when a Hispanic male in a white car pulled alongside their vehicle, Nelson said. The cousin told the driver that the man in the other car was trying to kill him. That was when the person in the suspect vehicle shot into the car striking the driver, according to Nelson.

The wounded victim exited the freeway and went to Usher Street to summon help, Nelson said. The passenger fled on foot and could not be located.

The suspect was also not located. The incident remains under investigation.
