ALAMEDA -- The SJND golf team is the co-champion of the TCAL after tying the playoff tournament with St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo, thanks in part to the contributions of three freshmen and a sophomore who all shoot in the high 30s or low 40s over nine holes.
Recently, the team defeated league leader St. Patrick-St. Vincent and Albany high school golf teams, placing it one game back in the standings with two to play. Its record is 8-2 and it trails SPSV, whose record is 8-1. SJND's home course is Chuck Corica Golf Course in Alameda, with a par 36.
The team is led by freshman golfers Octavio Guzman, James Lemos and R.J. Pimentel, as well as sophomores Thomas Lee and Clay Harding.
Coach Vic Quintell has been coaching golf at SJND for a decade, and he's inspired by the young players. He recounted the match with Albany at Tilden Golf Course on April 11.
"SJND was close through seven holes when our No. 1 player, freshman James Lemos started making his move and pulled ahead of Albany's No. 1, by 3 shots," he said. "It was still anyone's game when SJND's No. 5, R.J. Pimentel, came in from the 9th fairway with about a 50-yard chip to the pin for an Eagle on the Par 4 on the 9th hole."
In the playoff tournament with St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo, Lemos shot a 77, the low score of the tournament. The young SJND team is looking forward to moving on to the North Coast Section tournament Monday at Rooster Run Golf Course, Petaluma.
