The former sushi chef at Yoshi's in San Francisco will open his own Japanese restaurant in Berkeley this week.

Tomo Owada, a 20-year culinary veteran from Japan, will open Tomo's Japanese Cuisine on Wednesday. The menu will offer traditional Japanese cuisine with a Bay Area flair, using locally sourced fish for sushi and sashimi, California seasonal produce, and vegetarian and vegan options.

Tomo moved to the U.S. from Japan in 1999, and has worked as a sushi chef in Idaho and the Bay Area. Tomo's Japanese Cuisine is his first restaurant.

The restaurant is at San Pablo and University avenues and, beginning Wednesday, lunch hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner will be served 5 to 10 p.m.
