A story about Judy Jensen, who was killed by a suspected DUI driver in Brentwood, incorrectly reported the name of her husband. It is Elwood.

BRENTWOOD -- A man suspected of driving under the influence struck and killed a 74-year-old woman walking in a crosswalk Wednesday morning, police said.

Judy Jensen, of Brentwood, was struck while walking in the area of Grant Street and O'Hara Avenue at 8:16 a.m., according to Brentwood police. Jensen was taken to Sutter Delta Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Neighbor Darlene Wright said Wednesday afternoon that Jensen's husband, Elwood, had told her the couple had hugged before he went on his daily bike ride Wednesday morning.

"She was such a sweetheart," said neighbor Darlene Wright. "She would wait on the corner for him every day. I am still in shock."

Police say the 43-year-old driver, who investigators did not immediately identify, struck Jensen, then hit a curb, a fire hydrant and a sound wall. A juvenile passenger suffered a minor abrasion.

The driver was not injured.

Officers searching the car found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, said Brentwood police Sgt. Bryan Smith. The man was determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance, Smith said.

He was booked into County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, child endangerment, driving under the influence resulting in injury, and drug related charges.
