BYRON -- Byron Union School District is now accepting applications to fill a vacant seat on its board of trustees.
Now-former trustee Ken Silman, who was elected to a third term in November, resigned last month so he could apply for the vice principal position at Excelsior Middle School. Silman said Wednesday he made the decision so as not to "taint the process."
Those interested must live in the Byron district, be a registered voter, over 18 years old and not an employee of the school district.
Applications must be submitted by 3 p.m. May 23.
The board will interview candidates at its May 30 meeting, accept oral or written public input, and select the appointee by a majority vote, according to the district.
Silman said he had mixed emotions about his decision.
"When I first started looking into a career in administration, Excelsior and Heritage High School were the only two places I was considering. I was not expecting another opening for at least a few years," Silman wrote in an April 29 resignation letter. "When the position suddenly came open, I decided it was time to try and realize one of my dreams."
As it turns out, Robert Bowers was selected as the vice principal. Silman said he now will apply for the trustee vacancy.
The appointed trustee will hold office until the next regularly scheduled election in November 2014.
Applicants should complete a board member candidate information sheet and return them to district administrative assistant Bev Nicolaisen or e-mail to her at email@example.com.
