RICHMOND -- Authorities are looking for the owner of a pony that was found munching on a bush in a front yard in the city's Iron Triangle neighborhood early Wednesday.

Officers found the small horse snacking on shrubbery near Seventh Street and Nevin Avenue around 3 a.m., said Det. Nicole Abetkov of the Richmond Police Department.

An Animal Services officer picked up the pony and brought it to the agency's stables in Martinez. So far, no one has stepped forward to claim the animal, and officers are puzzled as to where the small horse could have lived.

Abetkov said officers had found a few stray horses that had wandered away from their ranches up in the hills outside Richmond before, but no one in the department had ever encountered anything like a pony in the Iron Triangle.

The pony is described as a "healthy looking" female, with white and brown coloring, roughly 5 to 8 years old.
