HAYWARD -- A woman was in stable condition after being stabbed at least a half-dozen times during an early morning attack about four blocks south of the Hayward BART station.

The victim was not seriously injured, and police said that the incident was gang-related.

Officers responded about 3 a.m. Sunday to Grand Avenue and Dean Street for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to information released by Hayward Police on Thursday.

The victim told police she was walking in the area, just south of downtown, when she was approached by two people¿.

The two assaulted her with an unknown object resulting in six to eight stab wounds, police said.

The two fled the area an unknown direction in an unknown vehicle.

Police did not provide a description of the victim's attackers including if they were males or females.

She was taken to a hospital in stable condition where she was treated and released for injuries that were not life-threatening, Lt. Mark Stuart said.

A motive for the attack was not immediately known, but Stuart said the stabbing appears to be a gang-related, and the victim has not been cooperative with police in their investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the attack is asked to call police at 510-293-7000.
