Local teams in NCS playoffs
The North Coast Section baseball and softball playoffs got underway this week. All three city baseball teams advanced to the postseason. No. 9 seed Alameda (17-9) and pitcher Matt Esparza, pictured, hosted Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa (14-12) on Tuesday at Lincoln Park in a Division II first-round game. Cardinal Newman won 4-1. St. Joseph Notre Dame, the No. 7 seed in the Division V field, beat No. 10 Bentley 6-5 at College of Alameda on Tuesday. No. 13 Encinal (10-13-1) traveled to Arnold Field in Sonoma to play No. 4 Sonoma Academy (17-9) on Wednesday in Division III action. Sonoma Academy won 12-3. With Alameda (13-13) being left out of the Division II softball field, only one local girls team moved on. St. Joseph Notre Dame (12-7) earned the No. 7 seed in Division V and beat Urban-San Francisco (8-10) 8-2 on May 21 at Leydecker Field.
