Alameda tops O'Dowd for WACC-Foothill title

  • Erik VanWinkle was hit by a pitch to force in the go-ahead run and Matt Esparza came in relief to get out of a jam as the Alameda High baseball team won the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division playoff title with a 4-3 win over Bishop O'Dowd in 11 innings on May 16 at San Leandro Ball Park. VanWinkle was hit by a Michael Perri fastball to force in Drew Huie and give the Hornets the lead. Alameda (17-9) received a No. 9 seed for the North Coast Section Division II playoffs and took on No. 8 Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa on May 21 at Lincoln Park. Cardinal Newman won 4-1. Bishop O'Dowd, the 11th seed in Division I, was edged 5-4 in 10 innings by James Logan in a first-round game on May 21.

    Horst pitches Piedmont past San Leandro

  • Senior Matt Horst threw a two-hitter and also scored the game's only run as the Piedmont High baseball team beat San Leandro 1-0 to win the WACC-Shoreline Division tournament title on May 16. Horst struck out four and had just one walk. He also scored on Spencer Gutterman's double in the fourth inning. Piedmont received the No. 3 seed for the NCS Division IV playoffs and San Leandro is the No. 12 seed for the Division I playoffs.

    Albany swimmer shines at NCS meet

  • Ariana Saghafi won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.46 seconds and took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.79 to lead the Albany High swim team at the NCS championships May 17-18 at Concord Community Pool. Carondelet's Chelsea Chenault won the 200 freestyle in a new section meet record time of 1:44.45.

  • North Coast Section Meet of Champions, track and field, May 24-25, 9 a.m. -- The top track and field athletes in the section will gather at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley for the NCS Meet of Champions, looking to California Interscholastic Federation state championships May 31-June 1 at Buchanan High in Clovis. Field event finals begin at 9:30 a.m. on May 24. Track finals start at 1:30 p.m. on the 25th.

  • Ariana Saghafi, Albany girls swimming -- Saghafi won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.46 seconds and took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.79 to lead the Cougars swim team at the NCS championships at Concord Community Pool.

  • Max Goldstein, St. Mary's baseball -- Goldstein, a junior, went 2 for 4 with a run and three RBIs to lead the Panthers past Pinole Valley 5-1 in the championship game of the Tri-County Athletic League playoffs on May 17.

  • Sean Cunningham, Alameda baseball -- Cunningham went 3 for 6 for the Hornets in their 4-3, 11-inning victory over Bishop O'Dowd in the WACC-Foothill Division tournament title game.

  • Matt Horst, Piedmont baseball -- Horst threw a two-hitter and also scored the game's only run as the Highlanders beat San Leandro to win the WACC-Shoreline Division tournament title and clinch an automatic berth to the NCS playoffs. Horst also struck out four and had just one walk.

  • Eugene Hamilton III, Bishop O'Dowd track and field -- Hamilton had the fastest times in the boys 1,600 (4:20.01) and 800 (1:54.40) at the NCS Bay Shore meet on May 18. In both races, he used a superior kick in the final straightaway to win his heat.
