With just about two hours of sleep, Jake Davidson felt like he was still in a dream state on Friday.
The night before, the Sherman Oaks teen had pulled up to his high school prom in Santa Monica and stepped out of the limo with Danish supermodel Nina Agdal on his arm.
"I never thought it was going to happen, but it was quite the twist -- one of the most awesome twists," Davidson said the next day. "I'll definitely tell stories about for this for the rest of my life."
Davidson managed to land the date after his first attempt - using YouTube to ask out the more famed American supermodel Kate Upton -- didn't quite work out. When Upton said her schedule wouldn't allow her to make it, Davidson soon heard from Agdal's reps that she'd be glad to go. Agdal, 21, was the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition's 2012 Rookie of the Year and is the bikini-clad beach girl in Carl's Jr. television ads.
So there he found himself at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica just before sunset on Thursday, arriving to his prom with a world-renowned model as news cameras were rolling.
Davidson said Agdal was easy to talk with and the two got to know each other pretty well during their more than one-hour-long limo ride in Los Angeles traffic. Among the things they had in common was that they both play basketball and lack skills on the dance floor.
"I don't really dance and neither does she," Davidson said. "So we bonded over the inability to slow dance."
Agdal arrived to Davidson's house around 3 p.m. Thursday in a limo with a flowing sage-green gown. In heels she towered over him by several inches. There the couple conducted several prom traditions from taking photos in the yard to pinning on the boutonniere and putting on the corsage. Davidson's friend Talia Myers, an aspiring filmmaker who helped him make the original Upton video, was there to capture it all in film and photographs.
"She seemed genuinely excited to be there," Myers said. "I mean, she hung out with us for like six hours, which is above and beyond what we expected. She just made it really special for him."
Myers even got some pointers from Adgal that allowed for her to capture "unique footage," she said.
Agdal seemed to enjoy herself as well, and afterward tweeted out: "Had such a great prom night. Thank you jakedavidson23 for being an awesome date!"
Davidson's mother, Cheryl, was happy for her son, but sought to calm the hype.
"I think people need to keep this in perspective. It's a 17-year-old boy asking a cute girl to the prom. That's it," Cheryl Davidson said on Thursday as her son and Agdal headed to a pre-prom party near Beverly Hills. "Nina's totally thrilled to be doing this. No one has twisted her arm."
Their night was cut short -- the couple only stayed at prom for about an hour due to issues with cameras filming other prom attendees who were minors -- and ended with "a nice hug."
"I kind of jokingly invited her to lunch, and I'm still waiting for that," Davidson said Friday morning. "But I definitely said that next time she's in L.A. she's welcome to hit me up."
Davidson's prom adventure all started when he and Myers posted the video on YouTube in March, featuring him reading the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition with Upton on the cover, and then shaving, doing push ups and showering all while listing reasons she should go with him. It concluded with Davidson on one knee asking Upton out.
The video has since gotten 2.6 million hits. Upton later said on national TV that she was thinking about it and would check her schedule. But when the schedule didn't work out, he quite happily ended up with Agdal instead.
"I had a great prom. It was shorter than I expected, but it was still an awesome day," Davidson said. "It was a once in a lifetime opportunity."
