Guys prepare for their wedding days in different ways. Some go on an all-night bender with the boys. I spent the morning of my wedding getting a haircut and a massage. Hours before he was to marry Jessica Garcia-Kohl last Saturday, Sam Liccardo was swimming two miles with Silicon Valley Leadership Group CEO Carl Guardino at the Courtside pool in Los Gatos.

"We did the same thing when I got married," said Guardino, who also served as a groomsman.

The workout probably helped keep the San Jose city councilman energized for two days of events. The ceremony was Saturday evening at Mission Santa Clara, where Liccardo earned "Romantic Guy of the Year" honors by giving his bride a quick peck after she got choked up during their vows. (I was a witness to the gesture as my daughter, Mia, joined 8-year-old Jessica Guardino as flower girls.)

The wedding reception at San Pedro Square Market had a "Valley of Heart's Delight" theme. When guests arrived for the al fresco dinner, they found their names on little flags stuck into apricots, artichokes and plums at each table. And the wedding favors included chocolate-covered apricots from Andy Mariani's ranch in Morgan Hill, where the bride grew up.

Most of the Saturday night guests returned to San Pedro Square Market on Sunday morning for a brunch reception.

Those congratulating the newlyweds included San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed; City Manager Debra Figone; City Council members Rose Herrera, Kansen Chu, Pierluigi Oliverio and Pete Constant; District Attorney Jeff Rosen; Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager; Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Paul Bernal; ex-Mayor Tom McEnery; and San Francisco Supervisor (and groomsman) David Chiu.
