HAYWARD -- The Civil Air Patrol cadet squadron is hosting an open house Saturday, with a special invitation to youth ages 12 to 18.
The cadet program trains young people in search and rescue, and teaches them about aerospace, including offering flights in powered aircraft and gliders. It provides leadership training, technical education and scholarships.
The Civil Air Patrol, a nonprofit organization, is an auxiliary of the Air Force that performs emergency services, including search and rescue missions. Its members act as mentors to the cadets.
The open house will include tours of East Bay Cadet Squadron 18 headquarters on the south end of the Hayward Executive Airport in the Air National Guard building, 1525 W. Winton Ave.
The open house is 2 to 6 p.m. For more information, go to www.sq18firebirds.com.
