HAYWARD -- A man who drove his car into a CVS Pharmacy early Friday morning walked away with minor scratches, and the store was damaged but will be open for business, police said.
The wreck happened at about 3:20 a.m. after the driver failed to negotiate a construction zone properly and turned into the store at 22501 Foothill Blvd., Hayward police Sgt. Mark Ormsby said. Construction in the area to create a loop to ease traffic congestion has been underway for months, and Ormsby said the area is clearly marked.
Still, the driver failed to turn right onto A Street and nearly into a barrier before swerving into the front entrance of the store, Ormsby said.
The driver suffered only minor scratches and was treated at the scene and released, Ormsby said. He was not cited.
The wreck left shattered glass and concrete near the entrance and damaged a store beam, store manager Gil DeAnda said.
"It was basically just cosmetic," DeAnda said.
The store still was scheduled to open at 8 a.m., as scheduled, DeAnda said.
