OAKLAND -- An 11-year-old boy was shot as he slept in his bed during a drive-by shooting early Sunday off Adeline Street in West Oakland, authorities said.

Police received a report that a sleeping child had been shot in the shoulder at 5 a.m., about a minute after ShotSpotter alerted officers to gunfire in the 1100 block of 7th Street, Officer Jim Moore said. The child was the only person injured in the shooting, and he was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Multiple rounds were fired through the front walls and windows of the townhome, where one adult lived with four children between the ages of 11 and 18, the youngest being the boy that was shot, police said. The townhome next door was also hit in the hail of gunfire, and was also home to a mother and her three kids between the ages of 6 and 18.

Police do not believe that either townhome was the shooter's intended target, and that it is more likely that someone was being shot at on the street outside the apartments or from car to car, authorities said. No suspects have been identified at this time.

Police and CrimeStoppers of Oakland are offering up to $20,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information may contact Oakland police at 510-238-3821 or the anonymous tip line at 510-772-2508.
