A crash on northbound Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward on Sunday night sent two children to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and backed up traffic for more than an hour and a half, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash was reported at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday on northbound Interstate Highway 880, just north of the A Street on-ramp, Officer Ralph Caggiano said.
Details of how the crash happened are unknown, but a car ended up in an embankment, Caggiano said.
According to a driver who passed the crash site, a white sedan was "pancaked" from the side and the damage made "it impossible to make out what type of car it was."
Traffic was backed up for about four or five miles, the witness said.
Two juveniles, whose ages are unknown, were rushed to a hospital to be treated for major injuries considered life-threatening, Caggiano said.
The roadway was cleared at about midnight, but the condition of the juveniles remains unknown, according to the CHP.
