NEWARK -- A man is dead after he abruptly careened across traffic lanes and down an embankment on Mowry Avenue Friday night, according to police.
At 6:02 p.m., officers responded to the solo-vehicle crash next to the NewPark Mall and found a male in his early 50s suffering from serious injuries, said Sgt. Manuel DeSerpa of the Newark Police Department.
The man was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
According to DeSerpa, the man was traveling westbound on Mowry Avenue when he abruptly veered to the left across eastbound lanes and then over an embankment. His car went down the hill and came to rest against a tree.
His identity is not being released pending next of kin.
No one else was injured.
The off-ramp and roads around the mall have been shut down and CHP officers are assisting with traffic control.
Newark police said Mowry Avenue is likely to be heavily congested near NewPark Mall until about 11 p.m. due to the investigation.
