BERKELEY -- A fire destroyed the majority of a home on Curtis Street Tuesday morning, but no one was injured, a fire officials said.
The fire broke out on the first floor of the two-story home in the 1400 block of Curtis Street at 10:18 a.m., said Berkeley Fire Department Acting Deputy Chief Avery Webb.
It quickly spread up a staircase, to the second floor and then to the attic, Webb said. Firefighters had to open the roof to control the fire, he said. It was controlled by 10:52 a.m.
About 80 percent of the home was damaged, Webb said; he estimated the value of the damage at about $400,000. The fire remains under investigation, but the cause appears to be accidental, Webb said.
