BERKELEY -- Police are asking for the public's help in locating a 33-year-old Berkeley man who broke into a multi-unit building last weekend, entered a woman's bedroom while she was sleeping and sexually assaulted her, police said.
Berkeley police have sought an arrest warrant for John Anthony Martin, but police spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said there is probably cause to arrest him. She declined to elaborate.
Sunday at 9:30 a.m., police believe, Martin entered the building in the 2400 block of Piedmont Avenue -- on the UC Berkeley fraternity and sorority row --and prowled through several rooms before entering a woman's room and touching her in "an inappropriate manner."
She woke up, yelled and he ran out of the room and left the building, police said. Police declined to name the building where the assault took place or say if it's a fraternity or sorority house.
Police are warning residents not to approach Martin, but to call 911 if he is spotted. He is 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 280 lbs. with brown hair and hazel eyes. He has tattoos on his chest.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts or the investigation should call the sex crimes unit at 510-981-5735 or the non-emergency line at 510 981-5900. Anonymous tips can be called in to Bay Area Crimes Stoppers 800-222- 8477.
