OAKLAND -- A 29-year-old woman was shot in the leg early Friday after she and three other people were confronted by robbers while sitting on a bench in Lakeside Park, the latest in a series of holdups in the area, police said.

The woman was in stable condition at a hospital and is expected to recover.

The shooting and robbery happened about 12:20 a.m. Friday in the park in the 560 block of Bellevue Avenue near Perkins Street.

Police said the woman was with two other women and a man sitting on a bench when they were approached by a man and woman who demanded their valuables. It was not disclosed if the victims lived in the area or somewhere else.

The woman was wounded when she stood up and apparently did something to cause the man to shoot her, police said.

The robbers fled on foot after getting a cell phone and wallet from one of the other people, police said.

Police recently put out an alert to residents in the area warning of a series of at least three robberies that have happened in the 400 block of Perkins and Bellevue and the 350 block of Belmont Street. In those robberies, two men armed with guns have approached victims during late night and early morning hours and demanded their valuables.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $8,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspects in Friday's incident. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3326 or a tip line at 510-773-2805 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
