OAKLAND -- A 34-year-old East Oakland man who responded to an attempted robbery by hitting a suspect in the head with a six-pack of beer was shot in the arm Sunday night, police said Monday.

The trio of suspects that had approached him fled without taking anything and the man will recover from his wound. His name was not released.

Police were checking hospitals to see if the injured suspect sought treatment.

The confrontation happened about 10:15 p.m. Monday on Bartlett Street near Penniman Avenue.

The man was walking home from a store when he was confronted by three men who told him not to move.

Thinking that he was possibly going to be robbed the man swung a six-pack of beer bottles he had purchased striking one of the suspects in the face. The impact caused the bottles to break.

Another suspect then shot the man in the arm. The suspects fled in a car without getting anything from the man, police said.

Police believe the same three are responsible for a robbery that happened 15 minutes earlier at Fruitvale Avenue and Logan Street where three people were held up at gunpoint but no one was hurt.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $7,500 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information may call investigators at 510-238-3326 or a tip line at 510-773-2805 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
