CASTRO VALLEY -- Castro Valley school trustees voted Monday to fill an upcoming board vacancy by making an appointment rather than calling a special election.

George Granger is resigning from the board effective Aug. 16 because he is moving out of the district.

The deadline to apply for the board seat is July 26. The board has 60 days, or until Aug. 29, to make an appointment to fill the position, which runs through November 2014.

The board is tentatively scheduled to conduct first-round interviews at a public meeting Aug. 6. Depending on the number of applicants, it may hold second and possibly third-round interviews Aug. 14 and 20.

Application forms are available in the district office, 4400 Alma Ave., and on the district's website, www.cv.k12.ca.us.
