On July 9, 1933, former President Herbert Hoover participated in the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Bay Bridge.

Join us online for a look back at the groundbreaking and construction of the bridge. Hoover, with golden spade, is flanked by Miss Alameda, Miss Prosperity, Gov. James Rolph Jr. and Miss Bay Bridge on Yerba Buena Island. Workers install the first connecting link of the 1,400-foot cantilever span for the East Bay portion of the bridge.
