NEWARK -- A 5-year-old boy suffered serious injuries and his mother also was hurt when a sport utility vehicle knocked them off their bikes Wednesday night, police said.
An SUV traveling north on Newark Boulevard collided with the boy and the woman in the crosswalk at Ruschin Drive, at about 8: 07 p.m., Newark police Sgt. Manuel DeSerpa said. The boy was under the SUV after the collision, but a bystander pulled him out and gave him first aid, DeSerpa said.
The boy and his mother were taken to a hospital trauma center, DeSerpa said, and remained hospitalized Thursday morning. It was not known if the boy's injuries were considered life- threatening. The mother's injuries were moderate, DeSerpa said.
The boy's father also was on the ride but was not injured, DeSerpa said.
The driver of the SUV, a 72-year-old woman, cooperated with police, and DeSerpa said alcohol and drugs are not considered to be a factor.
