OAKLAND -- Jazz at the Chimes is a concert series featuring some of the most accomplished Bay Area musicians and is held in the architectural landmark Chapel of the Chimes, designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan.

On Sunday, the chapel will feature the Dmitri Matheny Group, who will present a salute to the Great American Songbook.

Taking advantage of the intimacy and acoustics, the ensemble will perform favorite Broadway and Hollywood hits of the 1920s through the 1960s, including works by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and many more.

The Dmitri Matheny Group is a who's-who of Bay Area talent, including jazz musicians Matheny on fluegelhorn, Dave Ellis on tenor saxophone, Matt Clark on piano, Ron Belcher on bass and Akira Tana on drums.

Ensemble leader Dmitri Matheny graduated with honors from the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan before attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating magna cum laude in 1989.

After studying under Carmine Caruso in New York City, Matheny became the protégé of fluegelhorn master Art Farmer, who imparted his wisdom and encouraged Matheny to devote himself exclusively to the "Big Horn." It was under the tutelage of Farmer that Dmitri arose as a promising new voice in jazz.

At 29, Matheny made his New York debut at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and then began touring internationally.

Dmitri now performs with Grant & Matheny, a chamber jazz duo directed by pianist Darrell Grant, and with the Dmitri Matheny Group, an ensemble featuring top jazz artists from throughout the western states.

Matheny is the recipient of several prestigious music awards, including "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition" in the 46th Annual Down Beat International Critics Poll and "Best New Artist" in the 1999 JazzTimes Readers Poll.

The July 21 concert will be followed by a reception where the public can meet the artists, purchase CDs, and enjoy refreshments.

Mary D'Orazi, organizer of the Jazz at the Chimes concert series, recommends coming early as there is limited seating. Coming early also allows guests to tour the facility, D'Orazi said.
