Vacaville police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead after he allegedly tried to run over officers during a traffic stop, officials reported.
The unidentified suspect, who is believed to have been in his mid-20s, was shot at killed around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ulatis and Christine drives at the end of a pursuit that began in south Vacaville, said Vacaville police Lt. John Carli.
Following up on a report of suspicious behavior earlier in the day, officers tried to contact the suspect, who matched the description of the subject in the report, Carli said. As part of their routine, officers started extra patrols in the area and spotted a vehicle matching the description given by a citizen, a burgundy compact car. They waited for the suspect and tried to make contact with him. The driver refused to pull over when officers attempted to stop his car, launching them into a pursuit that hit surface streets with speeds reportedly around 25 mph.
