BAY POINT -- Fire crews are working to contain a fast-spreading brush fire that's near a chemical products plant, a Contra Costa Fire official said.

The fire started just before 1 p.m. off Stevens Road and was east of the General Chemical Corp. plant at 501 Nichols Road. The plant was not threatened.

According to fire officials, as of 4 p.m. the fire had been upgraded to a 4-alarm response with crews from the Contra Costa Fire District, Federal Fire and the East Bay Regional Parks Fire Department coming to help. The blaze had burned roughly 120 acres, but no structures were threatened.

Crews, working against steady winds that kept fueling the blaze, were setting backfires in an attempt to contain the flames. There was no estimated time of containment.

The fire also was near the train tracks that run near the area, and the tracks were shut down in both directions.
