SAN PABLO -- A man fleeing from the police jumped over a 20 foot ledge into a drainage ditch early Saturday, suffering traumatic injuries according to fire officials.

Around 3:42 a.m., Contra Costa Fire Protection District crews responded to a call from San Pablo police, who were at Wildcat Creek, located at Contra Costa Avenue and Kirk Lane.

Crews found police officers over a 20 foot vertical edge with an unidentified male suspect they had attempted to detain but who had fled from them on foot and jumped a flood control barrier and fell to the creek bank below.

It is unknown why police wanted to detain the man.

The man had multiple traumatic injuries including a suspected femur fracture, fire crews said, and he was pulled up via rope before being transported by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

His condition is unknown.
