RICHMOND -- A 21-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday in Richmond's Iron Triangle neighborhood, marking the city's 15th homicide of 2013, police said.
Officers were called at 11:20 a.m. to the 500 block of Fourth Street for a report of a man who had been shot, Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said Monday.
When police arrived they found a man -- identified by police as Richmond resident Derrick Wilson -- lying in the street suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Wilson was taken to a hospital, where he was placed on life support. He was taken off life support and pronounced dead at 12:19 p.m. Sunday, Abetkov said.
Witnesses told police that the shooter rode off on a BMX bike. Police did not have a complete description of the suspect.
Investigators did not release any information about suspects or a possible motive but the killing marked the second of its kind in Richmond in less than one week. On Sept. 2, a man was found shot to death near the Richmond BART station, police said.
Faheim Smith, 30, of Richmond, was found about 10:10 p.m. near the corner of 19th Street and Nevin Avenue by a BART police officer. That officer heard a single gunshot and was flagged down by a citizen who said a man was down, Abetkov said.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not named any suspects but said someone was seen riding a bike in the area around the time the shooting happened, Abetkov said.
Police are investigating whether the shootings are related, but have not yet found any connection between the two incidents.
