BAY POINT -- A man who was struck by a vehicle late Wednesday was not using a crosswalk when he was hit, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

John Fransen said the 50-year-old Oakley man, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with major injuries after he was hit around 8:32 p.m. at the corner of Canal and Bailey roads. An update on the man's condition was not available Thursday.

Fransen said the Oakley resident was not using the crosswalk when he was hit and that poor lighting in the area may have also contributed to the incident.

The driver, a 64-year-old Pittsburg man, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the CHP's investigation, Fransen said. It does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, he added.

Anyone with further information about the collision is asked to call the CHP at 925-646-4980.
