SAN JOSE -- San Jose State senior cornerback Bené Benwikere was taken off the field on a stretcher Friday night after suffering an apparent neck or head injury during the third quarter of the Spartans' home game against Utah State.
Benwikere combined with teammate Christian Tago to tackle an Aggies receiver. He collided with Tago, and Benwikere's helmet immediately popped off and he landed on the ground and lay motionless.
He was quickly attended to by trainers and on-site medical personnel. They placed a brace on his neck and loaded him on to a stretcher and he was taken off the field.
Benwikere gave a slight wave of his hand as he was carted off the field.
Benwikere was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose for further observation. He had feeling in all of his extremities.
