Ashley Elizabeth Hammond, a 30-year-old Fremont resident, was arrested earlier this month for suspicion of auto theft, Milpitas Police Department reported.

On Oct. 4 at about 4:07 p.m., Milpitas police responded to the Burlington Coat Factory at 1400 Great Mall Drive on a theft in progress.

The suspect left the store and drove away in a white 2010 Toyota Highlander. An officer saw the vehicle in the parking lot of Great Mall and a computer check revealed it was reported stolen from Sunnyvale, police said.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and the driver, later identified as Hammond, was taken into custody without incident, police said.

Hammond was also in possession of methamphetamine, according to police. After further investigation, it was determined no theft had occurred at Burlington Coat Factory, police said.

Hammond was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of auto theft and possession of methamphetamine, police said.
