HAYWARD -- A power outage created when a van crashed into a telephone pole was almost fully restored Thursday morning, a PG&E spokesman said.

About 5,700 customers lost their power at 1:04 a.m. when the van slammed into the pole on Hathaway Avenue just north of A Street, PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said. The crash broke the pole and damaged a second one, Guidi said.

All of the affected customers live in Hayward, Guidi said. All but 48 of them had their power back by 7:30 a.m.

It was not known Thursday what caused the van to crash or whether the driver was injured. Calls to Hayward police were not returned Thursday.
