SAN LEANDRO -- A cab driver was assaulted and robbed early Thursday morning in what police believe was a coordinated crime between a passenger and an accomplice.

The driver picked up the male passenger at the San Leandro BART station at 1:10 a.m. and drove him to the 600 block of Marina Boulevard, according to a San Leandro Police Department news release. As the passenger got out of the cab and walked to what appeared to be a dark colored, American-made vehicle parked nearby, another man wearing a ski mask opened the front passenger door of the cab, punched the driver in the face and demanded money, the news release continued. The cab driver complied, and the attacker fled.

Police are issuing a warning to cab drivers about Thursday's robbery.

Police described the passenger as an African-American man in his 20s, approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall, with a thin build and long, braided hair. The vehicle believed to belong to the suspects was last seen leaving the area on Alvarado Street, according to the news release.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident or who might have information about the suspects to call the department at 510-577-2740.
