FREMONT -- An online fund has been set up to help pay for funeral and burial costs for 19-year-old Ashley Capuchin, the young mother struck and killed on New Year's Eve in a crash that seriously injured her infant son.
Capuchin's family is hoping to raise $10,000 on www.giveforward.com. So far, 36 people have donated over $3,000.
The 19-year-old and her 17-year-old sister had been sitting in a car on Paseo Padre Parkway just before 10 p.m., arguing with a third passenger, before Capuchin grabbed her 3-month-old son and apparently stormed out onto the busy thoroughfare, according to Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
The younger sister followed; they crossed a narrow median and into the southbound lanes. Then, all three were hit by a pickup truck driving south on Paseo Padre Parkway just past Mowry Avenue.
The sisters were not in a crosswalk when they were hit, Bosques said, and an investigation into the incident is still ongoing. The driver of the car who hit the sisters has not been arrested.
Capuchin's 3-month-old son remained in critical condition Thursday, Bosques said.
To donate to the fund, go to www.giveforward.com and search "Ashley Capuchin."
