RICHMOND -- A 30-year-old man tried to escape police early Tuesday, even trying to hide beneath a couple of cars, but a patrol dog ultimately tracked him down, police said.

Officers arrested Kharl Stuart on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle and evading after finding him "between and under" two cars, after he tried to run away at the conclusion of a chase, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said. Police had tried to pull over a Toyota Prius around 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of Marina Way and Barrett Avenue, only to see car take off, Abetkov said.

The car sped east down Barrett Avenue toward the Interstate 80 onramp and crashed into a fence after failing to negotiate a turn that led to the freeway, police said. During the chase, police learned the car had been stolen from an undisclosed city.

Police said Stuart got out of the car and ran down the 400 block of 44th, where the police dog sniffed him out underneath the cars, Abetkov said. He was booked into the County Jail in Martinez where he was being held in lieu of $165,000 bail.
