NEWARK -- Two small explosives were destroyed by a bomb squad after being discovered at a home during a probation search Friday, police said.

Alameda County's bomb squad was called in late Friday afternoon after Newark officers investigating a home in the 36900 block of Elm Street found two suspicious devices in back of the residence.

Officers evacuated the occupants of the home and neighboring residences for safety and after several hours, the bomb squad destroyed the explosives by squirting water on them, according to Newark police.

The investigation is ongoing, but police said one of the explosives contained melted metal inside.
