PITTSBURG -- A man and woman were in stable condition at a hospital Tuesday morning, hours after police said they were targeted in a shooting on a street in a residential neighborhood.

The victims, a 22-year-old man and 19-year-old woman both from Pittsburg, were walking to another residence in the 1900 block of Heatherwood Drive around 10:40 p.m. Monday when a red or maroon vehicle pulled up and an occupant started firing shots, Pittsburg police Lt. Ron Raman said. The woman was hit in the lower back, and the man was hit in the right arm, Raman said.

Police were still trying to clarify the make of the vehicle, and they said they gathered information that indicates the two victims were fighting with a third party in another area of the neighborhood sometime before the shooting, Raman said.

"We believe that the shooting may be connected to that altercation," Raman said. "We also have good reason to believe that the two victims were the targets of the shooting."

Two bullet holes in the front of a house on Heatherwood Drive were visible from the street Tuesday morning. The home's owner said the wounded woman ran screaming up to his door.

"I didn't answer immediately, because I'd just heard all these shots ring out and you don't know what's happening," said James Moore, who has lived in the home since 1990. "But after I opened the door, I saw the woman lying on her back. and I took her jacket off, and could see the blood. My wife called 911, and I grabbed a towel and put direct pressure on the wound."

Moore said the woman appeared to have been shot near her spine and was complaining that she had no feeling in her legs.

"We've had a couple of small things in the past, fires and burglaries," he said. "But nothing ever like this."

Police said they are following up on leads, but that no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is urged to call Pittsburg police at 925-252-4980.
