A 25-year-old ballroom dancer was sentenced to a year in jail Wednesday for engaging in a sex act with a teenage girl he met at a social dance event in Novato.
Richard Alan Selby III, a dance instructor and competitor specializing in the "West Coast Swing" style, was also ordered to register as a sex offender and placed on probation for five years, said Deputy District Attorney Dorothy Proudfoot.
The incident occurred last April, when Selby, a Modesto resident, attended a social dance at a rented studio in Bel Marin Keys. Police said Selby sent a lewd phone transmission to the girl prior to the sex act.
Selby pleaded guilty to oral copulation with a minor. He was sentenced by Judge Jeffrey Tauber in Marin Superior Court.
Selby's lawyer, Randy Sue Pollock of Oakland, declined to comment Wednesday.
Selby, who goes by the first name Richie, has advertised lessons at local events in Northern California, and videos of his competitive dancing are posted on YouTube.
