An 18-year-old burglary suspect was tackled to the ground and detained by a homeowner before being arrested by police in Newark on Friday night, officers said.

At about 9:50 p.m. a homeowner confronted a male suspect who was allegedly prowling in the homeowner's backyard on Dalewood Drive near Newark Community Park, police said.

Officers said the homeowner chased the suspect down the street, tackled him to the ground and held him down until officers arrived.

The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Newark resident Ruben Perez. Police found Perez in possession of items stolen from an unlocked vehicle on Madeline Street. Perez was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail, according to police.
