SAN LEANDRO - San Leandro police warned residents to be wary of phone scammers.

Police said it's common for scammers to identify themselves as government agents, and have figured out how to make their caller identification display phone numbers from legitimate agencies, including 911.

The scammers are also able to call the same potential victim more than once from different phone numbers and using different names, according to police.

Ultimately, police said the goal is to get people to give them money or information, including credit card numbers.

Under no circumstances are people advised to respond to these callers, even if the callers make threats of arrest for non-response.

Anyone suspicious that a scammer is targeting them is asked to call police at (510) 577-3230. They can also call anonymously at (510) 577-3278.
